PENTECOST SUNDAY is today. PICNIC SUNDAY is happening June 17 at Lakelse at 11 am.                                                                                                                                                                     This year it is the turn of Knox United Church in Terrace, to lead.                                                                                                                                                                  Use Furlong Bay entrance. Service at amphitheatre.                                                                                                                                                                                         A little bug spray may add to the comfort of the event!                                                                                                                                                                                   Bring food,  eating utensils, lawn chairs.

Betty Patterson’s burial of cremains was Friday, May 11, in Kitimat Cemetery.  Betty was a former Choir Leader here at First United.                                                                                             She died on November 17, 2011 in Gibsons. Our prayers and good wishes to husband John and to children Andrew, Christine, Trevor.

Dan Bremnes is coming to Kitimat First Baptist Church on Sunday, May 6, 2012 at 6pm. His concert is sure to be a memorable one. There is no fee, but an offering will be taken.

Church Council Highlights – April 26th:
• We are close to being right on budget for the end of the first quarter. Thank you for your conscientious financial support!
• Next Holy Communion is on May 6. In the following month is June 10.
• Approximately $800 was realized from the Spring Bulb gardening fund raiser
Conference Sunday will be June 3. BC Conference meets that weekend at UBC.
• Tentative date for Picnic Sunday at Lakelse is June 17. To be confirmed with Terrace.
Church Council will vote on three Remits on Sunday, April 29
• Next meeting of Church Council will be on Thursday, May 24
Summer Worship will be at our church in July and at Presbyterian Church in August. The time will be at 10 a.m., except on July 1 Canada Day, when the service is at 9:30 a.m.
• Research continues on redevelopment options and findings will be presented at a congregational meeting in early fall. Info will include costs associated with staying in the same building and upgrading it, verses developing a church/housing project.

Earth Sunday is next Sunday, April 22. Larry Scott will be away in Victoria to attend a friend’s memorial. Our Worship Leader will be Lynne Wahl and our guest pianist will be Robin Chan, who has played for us previously.                                       
Vesey’s Bulb Sale is in full swing this week … until Friday, April 20th. There are order forms at the back of the church. Please help spread the word about this fund raiser. The cost for bulbs and perennial is comparable to store prices and Vesey’s have an excellent reputation for their product. All orders will be here by mid-May, in time for planting.

Church Council Highlights from March 27: i) We have seven people from the congregation, who are forming a website working group; ii) Summer Services will see United Church host July and Presbyterian Church host August services – Anglican Church does wish to participate this year, as they are moving away from a Sunday morning church time; iii) a downstairs bedroom at manse was carpeted in early March; iv) Prince Rupert Presbytery meets in Kitimat September 27-30th; iv) a committee was formed to prepare some discussion proposals re congregational future, for next meeting of Church Council. Consensus was that in light of congregational feedback received, we are more a maintenance than a missioning congregation. Council will decide which options to research and bring forward to congregation at a later date.
Palm Sunday is the 6th Sunday of Lent. Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday and continues to the Monday after Easter Sunday. The Season of Easter runs 50 days from Easter Sunday to Pentecost.

Purdy’s Chocolate order is to arrive on March 23.
First United Church in the Downtown East Side of Vancouver, continues to operate as a shelter and a day program centre. As of March 1, Stephen Gray is the Executive Director. The government has extended the shelter contract. The many outreach programs of First United are in full operation, following a transition period.
